He can have a read at <a href="http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Downloading_data">http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Downloading_data</a> on how to extract data. There is also plenty of howtos on how to convert OpenStreetMap data into shape files.
