From tmitchell at osgeo.org Mon Nov 5 16:41:49 2007 From: tmitchell at osgeo.org (Tyler Mitchell (OSGeo)) Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 16:41:49 -0800 Subject: [OSGeo-Announce] Francophone Local Chapter Formed Message-ID: <8C368C40-54C4-4026-9F40-FC7841A07AF9@osgeo.org> On the 24th of September, the OSGeo Board accepted the formal creation of the Francophone Local Chapter. This is the first step toward a strong and stable Local Chapter and the next few months will see the creation of a legal association (OSGeo-fr) in order to increase its strength. This Local Chapter aims to help address internationalization and localization issues in software and documentation, as well as consider specific Francophone problems while promoting OSGeo, GFOSS, open standards and free data. The mailing list of the Francophone Local Chapter is a community of more than 115 subscribers from at least 8 different countries (including France, Switzerland, Canada, Belgium, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, New-Caledonia, Italia), and the Francophone Local Chapter wiki category counts 54 articles. Find more information about this Local Chapter on the wiki page or mailing list. Incubation is a stepping stone to becoming a full fledged OSGeo project. http://geos.refractions.net/ http://www.osgeo.org/incubator GEOS (Geometry Engine - Open Source) is a C++ port of the Java Topology Suite (JTS). As such, it aims to contain the complete functionality of JTS in C++. This includes all the OpenGIS "Simple Features for SQL" spatial predicate functions and spatial operators, as well as specific JTS topology functions such as IsValid(). GEOS is used by the PostGIS, MapServer, MapGuide, and GDAL/OGR projects for geometry processing. OpenLayers is a pure JavaScript library for displaying map data of many different formats (WMS ,WFS, Mapserver, GeoRSS, GML, TMS, GMaps, Virtual Earth, Yahoo.. and more) in most modern web browsers, and with no server-side dependencies. OpenLayers unites all these disparate data sources by implementing a single, intuitive JavaScript API, which allows developers to quickly and efficiently build rich web-based geographic applications. http://www.openlayers.org/ Graduating incubation includes requirements for open community operation, a responsible project governance model, code provenance and license verification and general good project operation. Graduating incubation is the OSGeo seal of approval for a project and gives potential users of the project added confidence in the viability and safety of the project. http://www.osgeo.org/incubator -- ---------------------------------------+-------------------------------------- I set the clouds in motion - turn up | Frank Warmerdam, warmerdam at pobox.com light and sound - activate the windows | http://pobox.com/~warmerdam and watch the world go round - Rush | President OSGeo, http://osgeo.org From tmitchell at osgeo.org Wed Nov 21 07:56:41 2007 From: tmitchell at osgeo.org (Tyler Mitchell (OSGeo)) Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2007 07:56:41 -0800 Subject: [OSGeo-Announce] Italian Local Chapter Formed Message-ID: The Italian Language OSGeo Local Chapter was formally accepted by the OSGeo Board of Directors at the September 7, 2007 meeting [1] and it is based on the existing association "Associazione Italiana per l'Informazione Geografica Libera (Gfoss.it)". GFOSS.it was founded by the Italian GFOSS community during the 8th GRASS e GFOSS (Palermo, February 14-16, 2007) annual meeting. The Italian community includes many professional, university and government members with long national and international experience in the field of the Geomatics and Free and Open Source Software. Italian Local Chapter mission is to respect OSGeo Guidelines [2] on local chapters and continue supporting all Italian Community contributions [3] to FOSS GIS community. Main goal is that of the OSGeo Foundation: to encourage the use and collaborative development of community-led projects. Currently the Italian community accounts for about 60 members and 300 mailing list subscribers.
