This release includes over 140 bug fixes and stability improvements and introduces several new features including Python support, see below for previews! Binary and source code packages are available at http://download.qgis.org. Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS), licensed under the GNU General Public License, that runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, and Windows. QGIS is Open Source software and its free of cost (download here). It supports vector, raster, and database formats (including the most common ESRI ShapeFile and geotiff). QGIS supports a wide variety of plugins to do things like display tracks from your GPS, and much more. They can be easily managed through the Plugin Manager. It is helping to build solid organisational foundations for those public sector bodies and SMEs which use the Free and Open Source GIS and Remote Sensing projects which OSGeo exists to support. In carrying out analysis of appropriate software for use in GIS and RS projects relating to the Environment and management of Environmental Information, CASCADOSS is offering a invaluable service to both users and developers of FOSS4G projects. Documentation and evaluation of software and standards for specific user communities is not a always focus of our software development communities. However, such efforts are necessary to reach our goal of spreading the use of Open Source software and its positive economic / organizational application in to new and broader constituencies. A third-party effort to offer clarity on licensing and future maintenance options to public sectors and SMEs will serve to provide mutual benefit for everyone in the broader FOSS4G community. An effort like CASCADOSS serves as valuable bridge-building between the free software development community and GIS tools user communities. This is especially helpful for bridging between networks of specialists, scientists and scientific units such as those involved in Europena Union GMES Programme. CASCADOSS also aims to spread information on use of FOSS4G among EU countries with special focus on New Member States. This effort will encourage potential users in the broaden application of FOSS4G solutions. OSGeo is glad to offer support to CASCADOSS where it can, including promotion of associated events, and re-dissemination of output reports and other documentation. http://www.cascadoss.eu/en/index.php From warmerdam at pobox.com Thu May 15 09:12:19 2008 From: warmerdam at pobox.com (Frank Warmerdam) Date: Thu, 15 May 2008 12:12:19 -0400 Subject: [OSGeo-Announce] FOSS4G 2008 Call for paper and workshops extended! The deegree project is about to celebrate its 7th birthday. deegree is an internationally successful Open Source Framework (?construction set?) for building geoportals and Spatial Data Infrastructures. deegree components are used inter alia: as Reference Implementation for the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), in diverse national and international SDI projects, as internal enterprise solution for efficient exchange of geodata, in international research and development projects. After 7 years of continuous development, the deegree project today comprises the most comprehensive implementation of international standards (OGC/ISO) in Free Software. On 17th June 2008 the third deegree day takes place as a meeting of developers and users in the Universit?tsclub Bonn to support and push forward the community-driven development process. deegree day offers a platform for exchange of experiences and for discussion. Developers describe current and future features of deegree. Users present current project results. It is possible to discuss important, pending questions regarding deegree technology and to become informed about the project organisation. Participation: The event is free of costs - register on-line at http://deegreeday.deegree.org Two intensive workshops (18th June, each half-day) are offered in the course of the event. The discussed topics can be voted on on-line. Registration will be possible starting end of May via PDF form. PCI is well respected throughout the geospatial industry for their software and solutions for geospatial imaging applications. Here is how they describe their interest in open source technologies: "PCI Geomatics uses a number of open source tools and software in its development process. We do this because our programmers often know the tools and the software that is made available for specific applications is usually the best. PCI Geomatics has frequently contributed to the open source community and will continue to do so. We believe OSGeo is the appropriate geospatial organization to work with and they have a strong local (Ottawa) presence." Please join me in thanking them for their encouraging show of support for OSGeo.
