Our base operating system for the new version is Lubuntu 24.04. The final version is planned to be ready in October 2024 to be ready for FOSS4G 2024 in B?lem (Brasilia) [1]. Please have a look at our schedule for the detailed steps [2]. Open tickets are listed in [3]. We are looking for new projects ------------------------------------------- For this release, we hope to help OSGeo Community projects join OSGeoLive, and work out how we can keep within our size constraints. You are welcome to join our team! ----------------------------------------------- Are you interested in joining our Open Source GIS experience? Are you a programmer or packager with experience in one of the Open Source GIS applications? Are you a technical writer interested in making FOSS4G accessible to all? Are you interested in helping update translations to latest documents on Weblate [4]? Contact us ---------------- If you would like to add a new project or have another goal you would like to work on and get involved you are very welcome. Please join the OSGeoLive mailing list [5] or OSGeoLive Discourse [8] meet us on Jitsi [7] at our weekly meetings (Tuesdays at 19:00 UTC). Our wiki can be found on [6]. Documentation and translation ----------------------------------------- With this building cycle we are starting with a new category [8] on discourse. The main focus of this category is documentation and translation. Translation is taking place on [4], and we have a basic training video [9]. We want to be able to add as many new languages to the release's documentation. Those with at least 35% will be considered for inclusion in the documentation. If you have questions on how to add a language, please do not hesitate to ask in [8]. Pull requests for documentation are welcome in OSGeoLive's documentation github repository [10]. The Sol Katz Award for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) will be given to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the FOSS4G community. Recipients of the award will have contributed significantly through their activities to advance open source ideals in the geospatial realm. Solomon 'Sol' Katz was an early pioneer of FOSS4G and left behind a large body of work in the form of applications, format specifications, and utilities while at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. This early FOSS4G archive provided both source code and applications freely available to the community. Sol was also a frequent contributor to many geospatial list servers, providing much guidance to the geospatial community at large. Sol unfortunately passed away in 1999 from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but his legacy lives on in the open source world. Those interested in making a donation to the American Cancer Society, as per Sol's family's request, can do so at https://donate.cancer.org . Nominations for the Sol Katz Award should be sent to solkatzaward at lists dot osgeo dot org with a description of the reasons for this nomination (after sending, please wait for the moderator to accept your message). Nominations will be accepted until end-of-day 4th October Anywhere on Earth. A recipient will be decided from the nomination list by the OSGeo selection committee. The winner of the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software will be announced virtually during the FOSS4G 2024 event in Bel?m, Brasil. The hope is that the award will both acknowledge the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come. It should be noted that past awardees and selection committee members are not eligible. Over these years, our collaborative efforts have ensured that over 1,800 valuable FOSS4G conference recordings and historic FOSS GIS videos are not only preserved but also made accessible and citable as part of the global scientific heritage. The AV-Portal, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in April this year, has been instrumental in this mission. As a non-commercial, open platform for scientific content, the AV-Portal has amassed more than 45,000 videos and serves as a critical resource for researchers and enthusiasts in a variety of fields, including the geospatial sciences. Our community has benefited immeasurably from this resource, generously funded by German taxpayers and managed with exemplary dedication by TIB Hannover. The ability to access, cite, and explore geospatial content through FAIR persistent identifiers such as DOI ensures that this knowledge is preserved for future generations and seamlessly integrated into scientific discourse. As OSGeo continues to support and promote open source geospatial software, we acknowledge the indispensable role of platforms like the AV-Portal in our journey. Here's to more years of successful partnership, shared growth, and mutual enrichment in the pursuit of open and accessible scientific knowledge.
