The ASDD search uses the old Z39.50 protocols and yes you can submit a search
to it via those protocols as opposed to a published API or web service.
However, GA are conducting a trial of using GeoNetwork for the ASDD. I do not
know where that is at but Ben Searle or John Hockaday should be able to tell
you. The intent is to bring the ASDD up to the current technologies so any
work that improves the functionality of GeoNetwork and its APIs should help
this process.

Thanks for the pointer Bruce ... this search form is excellent as it
indexes metadata from federated databases -- a huge accomplishment.

The only issue is that there is no API. Use of the search service is
restricted to the HTML form and static pages.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Here is why I think Google/ESRI announcement is so compelling...
Google's search API is published as a REST service.

it's simple to implement. Simplicity is often underrated. One factor
that makes or breaks a standard is its uptake amongst developers, and
that is related to long does it takes a developer to read the standard
and put together an implementation of the standard.

my reading of the point that Jo made about results is partly one of
comparative uptake of standards. It takes a lot longer to implement an
XML RPC interface vs. a RESTful interface. I suspect it's also the the
reason why it takes so long for projects that have to implement
cumbersom standards to get up and running.
