In the interest of seeking participation from the Oceania region for the
conference we're planning...
See below email with thoughts from our friends & neighbours in the Pacific
Islands, who are also planning a FOSS4G event for 2018. I hope we'll be
able to work together on our regional event. If people have contacts in the
Oceania region who might be interested in participating in this conference,
either by helping to plan it or attending, please get them in the loop!
Cheers
John

Thanks, it's very good to hear your thoughts.
Re: competing, I couldn't agree more: why compete? This kind of event is
all about building community, and when we cooperate we are a stronger
community. Our goals & objectives are to bring people interested in open
source spatial stuff (software, data, community) together. The main
audience will include GIS people, software developers, and students,
particularly for the FOSS4G component, but we also are planning to hold a
State of the Map as part of our event - so there will be interest from the
OpenStreetMap community as well.
We're planning our event for November 2018, so it sounds like there is
plenty of time between events to make sure they aren't in conflict.
Hopefully someone can represent the Melbourne event at FOSS4G Pacific
Islands Region in July (and vice versa)!
I will be very interested to follow the progress of your event. We're
committed to as much transparency as we can achieve, so please feel free to
keep an eye on our event as it unfolds, and make your opinions known on our
mailing list. And again, if any of you (or others in your region) are
interested to participate in the organisation of our event, we would love
to have your region represented. At present, we're composed of people from
Australia and New Zealand, but this feels like the perfect opportunity to
make FOSS4G stronger in our region by working together.
In solidarity...
John
