Ravi,
find an online use case of the federal geoportal at:
http://www.mapbender.org/Gallery#Geoportal_-_Rhineland_Palatinate_SDI
It is a good example for a national SDI with 1400 WMS and several thousand
layers.

I gave a presentation on the Pollution Release and Transfer Registry of
the German Environmental Agency in Germany, of interest because an OSM map
is used for background. It is available here:
http://arnulf.us/publications/case_study_pollutant%20_release_and_transfer_registry.odp
http://arnulf.us/publications/case_study_pollutant%20_release_and_transfer_registry.pdf

There are three dozen + municipal map portal sites listed in the Mapbender
Wiki at: http://www.mapbender.org/Gallery

My presentations detailing the municipal applications are all in German
language but I can translate one of them if you let me know what content
would be of most interest for you. There are applications for tourism,
cadastral base map, waste removal plans, etc.

Best regards,
Arnulf.
