Thuy, Franz-Josef,

Thanks for your efforts in this and it is excellent to see lot of developments and activities happening in Malaysia .

Thuy, really good to see that you are collaborating with UTM for helping them establish an Open Source Geospatial lab there. That is exactly the vision we aimed for OSGeo-ICA MoU. UTM staff once they establish their lab in their university will hopefully share expertise and help other universities in Malaysia to establish dedicated Open Source Geospatial Labs . That way, there will be more momentum to our education efforts.

Franz-Josef, thanks for offer for arranging meeting for building OSGeo: Malaysia chapter at AGSE conference and also FOSS4G sessions idea. I am ccing to OSGeo Board for their ideas and inputs for this.

I think having a strong OSGeo: Malaysia chapter established bringing together key members from different universities, government organisations, industries in Malaysia will help in building up OSGeo activities to the next level in Malaysia and will act as a catalyst for building up OSGeo presence and activities across South East Asia in the future.

Board, please send your ideas and also contacts in Malaysia to help start building activities for setting up OSGeo chapter in Malaysia.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Subject: RE: Building OSGeo Malaysia Chapter

Dear Franz-Josef,
Thanks for your email.
We had a meeting with Alias and UTM team recently here. Some of the outcomes are
1. I will participant the summer school. Alias, I will send you the title and abstract very soon (after the AgriGIS workshop).
2. I will collaborate with UTM for establishing a OS Geo lab/group in JB.
3. Work together with UTM for building OSGEO Malaysia chapter.

An FOSS4G session is really a good idea. Looking into the confirmed presentation at the summer school, there's quite a number of OS Geo training (3hours). To my understanding, the summer school and conference will be running in parallel but in 2 different formats?
You're right, it's in rush now to bring enough interesting presentation to the FOSS4G session. We could use http://www.geospatialmedia.net/ to disseminate the information to Malaysian public organization and industry. I deliver a presentation on behalf of OSGEO at their symposium lately http://www.malaysiageospatialforum.org/. We may get a few enthusiastic players from public organizations.

It's harder to have presenters from neighboring countries. One reason is that FOSS4G will be soon in Beijing, another reason is that the community here is silent. I did a push last year to re-unite the community but not very positive response. You may know Venkatesh (Osaka University), who has been trying to do that for several years.

Cheers,
Thuy

Subject: Fwd: Building OSGeo Malaysia Chapter
Dear Dr Tuong Thuy Vu,

I am the head of the AGSE conference series. In 2012 this summer school will take place in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Since I am some kind of FOSS evangelist, I'd like to have something like a "Joint Conference" AGSE and FOSS4G SE Asia.

AGSE starts on Monday, 16 July. We could organize the FOSS4G part starting Wednesday (morning or lunch time) and continuing Thursday, with oral presentations and workshops dedicated to Open Source.

As Suchith suggests we could have a meeting for building OSGeo:Malaysia chapter.

We will modify our poster (see attachment) accordingly.

I think we have to hurry to to bring together people from universities, government organisations, industries in Malaysia and neighbouring countries.

Best regards

Franz-Josef

Hi Franz-Josef,

Thanks for the info. As you are organising AGSE2012 http://applied-geoinformatics.org/ in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, it is good opportunity to start building plans for establishing OSGeo Malaysia chapter. That will help build activities in Malaysia to the next level. Please also contact Dr Tuong Thuy Vu (Tuongthuy.Vu at nottingham.edu.my<mailto:Tuongthuy.Vu at nottingham.edu.my> ) for building ideas for this.

It might be good to have a initial meeting for building OSGeo:Malaysia chapter at the end of AGSE2012 to bring together staff from universities, government organisations, industries in Malaysia who might be interested to establish the chapter there. Please send your ideas to the discuss list. Thanks.

Best wishes,

Suchith
