The OGC has already compiled an extensive list of potential prior art 
related to web mapping. This information was compiled in 2001-2002 in 
response to MultiMap lawyers sending cease and desist orders to OGC members 
who were implementing WMS. Our compiled list of possible prior art was 
enough to stop that particular set of legal actions. This information was 
published but is also maintained on the OGC website.

The Apple patent application is very broad. On reading the patent, 
apparently Apple has never heard of the GIS industry :-) There is a group of 
GIS professionals collecting possible prior art to submit to the US Patent 
Office to support the community assertion that this patent should not be 
granted.

this should be of interest to OGC as well IMHO. It might be that they patent 
WMS
facets.
