Thanks Bart, Maria. We are also grateful to GeoCat for thier kind support for Student competition at FOSS4G 2015 Seoul (1.500€ to be divided to two prizes )

Yes, the OSGeo Budget feedback is the right opportunity to establish this Student Award (also i will be sending a separate email on the discussions we had in the ICA-OSGeo list on the longterm expansion plans for GeoforAll website) as long term initiative not just an ad hoc arrangement. We will only approach others (not just ICA, and ISPRS but also other interested organisions who wish to be part of the Student Awards initiative) after we set up a strong framework in place for this. We need the OSGeo Treasurer to be the contact and manage the accounts etc  for us. The 10k USD is the seed fund amount we will use to start the initiative and start inviting other interested organisations to contribute directly to OSGeo for this. We will also setup a website at Geo for All acknowledging all contributors who support this award initiative.

The student Awards are an excellent way to recognise and acknowledge the excellent contributions from students worldwide not only to  FOSS4G but also their contributions to open knowledge and being good global citizens by helping spread the benefits of education to all. Also by giving  certificates with the backing of three great geo organisations (ICA, OSGeo and ISPRS) will be a great moral boost for the students. This recognition is much much bigger than the monetary award .

Hey Suchith,

are the other 2 partners (ICA, ISPRS) contributing to this as well? If not, have they been asked already? Or are you suggesting OSGeo to fund this part completely on its own?

PS would be good to respond to the budget feedback request as well since it seems this is not allocated for in our budget already?
