Also it will be great if we can add "Training & Capacity Building using Open Source GIS and open data" esp. for developing countries in the OSGeo letter mentioning the "Geo for All' initiative and our aim to work with UN organisations and staff around the world for this.

It will also building upon our previous collaborations with the UN for this.

In 2012 and 2014 we have organised hands on workshop "Open Source GIS & WebMapping for UN staff" in Vienna, Austria. Barend Kobben (ITC) was the course organisor for this.

Details at http://www.un-spider.org/news-and-events/events/hands-workshop-open-source-gis-and-webmapping-un-staff-20-and-21-november-201

Best wishes,

Suchith

Hi Jeff,

This is excellent development aimed for the long term vision. Thanks to you, Sanghee and everyone who have contributed for this excellent initiative. This is really strategic for OSGeo and great idea to exchange official letters, to formalize our relationship with the UN.

It has been really worth the efforts to get the UN dedicated session organised at Seoul FOSS4G (and hopefully for all future main FOSS4Gs)

Best wishes,

Suchith

Hi Suchith, Maria, all,

I have been speaking directly with Kyoung-Soo Eom since Seoul, the chief
of the UN Geospatial Information Section. As you know the Board met
with the UN GIS team in Seoul, and there was some great discussions.
Because of the long process involved in an MoU at the UN, it was
suggested by Mr. Eom that we bypass that long process and instead
exchange official letters, which I believe is a great idea, to formalize
our relationship. Mr. Eom has also invited OSGeo to be part of a
working group on Geospatial Information and Services for Disasters, as a
first step. Of course I'll be bringing up to speed all of the OSGeo
board on this, by discussing these possible steps at our first meeting
next week on 15 October. But I believe this is wonderful momentum with
the UN and OSGeo. I must give credit to Sanghee to bring the two teams
to the same table, during the chaos of running his FOSS4G Seoul - very
forward thinking of him.

Maria: I am also part of the "UN products" team.

Talk soon,

-jeff
