It is already relevant, it was a key theme of foss4g 2015. Indeed we met a
great team repurposing a C++ geometry 3d library through a java bridge to
use for GeoServer publishing of indoor mapping.
Notes:
Our open source crew at OSGeo depends on the JTS Topology Suite for an
implementation of geometry and spatial relationships on a 2d plain. There
is an add on projects Spatial4J that does geometry on a sphere. These use a
dim9 matrix (inside, boundary,outside compared for a 3x3 matrix). The C++
library used for indoor mapping did dim4 spatial relationships (comparing
inside and boundary of two geometries for a 2x2 matrix).
This work is so much the basis of our open source GIS scene that we awarded
Martin a Sol Katz award.
For our open source industry to move forward into indoor mapping we need
someone to bankroll an implementation of Geometry that can handle 3D (dim4
or dim9 or vector geometry relationships). It has not stopped us cold, but
it is one of the things I am interested in pursing with my pals over at
LocationTech. There is no reason for us to sit on the sidelines due to
lack of planning.
So if you meet any interested parties at GeoIoT please send them my way :)
