[Board] Proposal to start a "OSGeo Businesses" mail list

Steven,

As of today this is an open list. We used before OSGeo Europe was founded.

My idea is that from an OSGeo perspective, we should support industry
initiatives, bring like minded brains together, create an environment to
encourage these initiatives, make the world aware that these initiatives
exist, ...

but the business initiatives themselves should be taken out of OSGeo by
our business partner members.

In 2 weeks I will test the 'OSGeo Eco-system' initiative on the INSPIRE
conference[3]. The idea is that OSGeo hosts a booth where at least one
industry partner, one governmental partner and one university partner
bring together the OSGeo story: why are they involved with OSGeo and why
are they promoting open source. Everyone from his/her perspective:

The industry partner can explain his services, the governmental partner
his FOSS projects and what they want to reach for, and the academic
partner about how they use FOSS to embed in their curricula etc...

By bringing these parties together on one booth, I hope to create an
environment where these parties can get to know each other better, and I
hope initiatives will raise among these partners, or with visitors of
the event.

If successful, I want to repeat this idea into other market domains...

Besides the community and networking effects, this way promotes
collaboration and shares costs amongst all parties. For the first event
I had 5 parties each paying 2000 Euro resulting in the biggest booth on
the INSPIRE conference with OSGeo. The cost and effort OSGeo Europe has
to invest is my own time.

Some events which could be candidate (short day now) are:

InterGeo[2] (16-18 October) ... Astrid has already an initiative there
form FOSSGIS, but maybe 2019 would be a good Horizon to try the OSGeo
Eco System idea

GeOnG forum: 29-31 october in France.[1]

Probably there are other events where our business partners want to go.
As OSGeo Europe doesn't believe in a Brexit, events in the UK can also
be organised under the 'OSGeo Eco-system' flag, as long as we respect
the 3 different perspectives...

Dirk
