Hello Board,

I would like to propose that OSGeo registers itself as a "community" in Zenodo.

Within GitHub, OSGeo is already registered as an organsiation, which allows to provide an overview over all OSgeo-related GitHub software repositories: https://github.com/osgeo

Zenodo (https://zenodo.org/) is a long term open acess repository (being open source, non-commercial and friendly), which is already used by many OSGeo projects for digital long term preservation of their code releases and to obtain DOI for FAIR due credit by scientific citation.

Currently, 24 OSGeo projects are using Zenodo for digital long term preservation: https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/DOI#DOI_available_for_OSGeo_Projects

The innovative GMT project community has already registered as a Zenodo community. This allows them to have an overview of all things "GMT" preserved in Zenodo:
https://zenodo.org/communities/generic-mapping-tools/records

Once a OSGeo community has been registered in Zenodo, we will be able to gain an overview of all OSGeo-related deposits in Zenodo, including software releases, but also data, publications, etc.

OSGeo has already registered a ROR ID at the Research Organsiation Registry, which can be used as a unique ID for the OSGeo Zenodo community:
https://ror.org/00cjqbk89

Details about the Zenodo community set-up process here: https://help.zenodo.org/docs/communities/

Should the Board decide to register an OSGeo Zenodo group, we can appoint volunteers taking on different roles in the curation process in a next step (Reader, Curator, Manager, Owner).

I it helps I'll gladly volunteer to drive this effort.

Kind regards,
Peter
