Senhores,
acabei por resolver esse problema do gdal, por enquanto, instalando conforme as orientações do geodjango
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.3/ref/contrib/gis/install/
colocando a opção -with-python.
Por hora esta resolvendo... achoq ue está certo.

Olá Pablo, todos,
tentei instalar o GDAL. As instruções (http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/GdalOgrInPython) eram:
GDAL can be installed from the Python CheeseShop:
$ sudo easy_install GDAL

imaginei que fosse para instalar a partir do:
/usr/lib/python2.6

depois falava que o local correto do gdal-config era: /usr/bin/gdal-config
entretanto o meu ficou em: 

como o tutorial falava:
After modifying the location of gdal-config, you can build and install
with the setup script:
Achei que era obrigatório a mudança. Fiz via mv. Não copiei apenas...
Mas tive que procurar algum setup.py, para executar o
 $ python setup.py build
Achei no local abaixo, mas olha a resposta..
root em koblitzlt:/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/numpy# python setup.py build
This is the wrong setup.py file to run

O que estou fazendo de errado? Tens alguma dica?
