I wanted to send a brief message to the chapter members about the 2009
Google Summer of Code. I'm currently seeking a student to mentor for
work on OpenJUMP as part of the OSGeo umbrella for the 2009 Google
Summer of Code. Student applications have to be submitted to Google by
April 3, 2009.
Google will provide a student stipend of $4,500, and a mentor stipend of
$500. (The mentor stipend will be donated to the OSGeo.)
I'd be looking for a student that could meet the following
qualifications:
- Familiar with GIS at a basic level.
- Able to spend 4 to 5 hours a week on coding, and another 1 to
2 hours on documentation/communications.
The following student qualifications would be helpful, but not required:
- Some programming background or experience.
- A strong math background.
The following student qualifications would be fantastic:
- A basic knowledge of Java programming and of common Java
development tools like Ant and Eclipse.
- A student located in Central California.
Aside from the $4,500 stipend, this would be a great opportunity for a
student to obtain:
- Practical programming experience on a real world project.
- Exposure to a great team of GIS programmers from around the
world.
- The chance to see how open source programming can be used to
solve everyday GIS challenges.
I'd also be willing to write a letter of reference for any student that
participates.
