Dear Tyler and carto list

First of all I want to introduce myself. I am Gabriel Asato, geologist and GIS Manager of the Geological Survey of Argentina and I have involved in GIS programming for map production for more than a decade using AML. For more than 5 years I have been working with python hoping that ESRI finally will adopt it as a reasonable GIS programming environment (it is seems that will finally be adopted in ArcGIS 9.4!!!)

I have read in a last post you are asking if this diagram it make any sense.

Well it will depend of what the people of this project think what it is a cartographic library-application-etc.

I remembered that a few years ago ESRI people were so worry because most of the cartographer in the world do not considered GIS as an adequate system for map production but either a nice system for geographic data management and analysis.

With few words and strictly speaking most of the cartographers think GIS do not produce maps!!!!

This is a very shocking statement specially to non cartographer who have been working with GIS for years!!!

If this list think that GIS can produce maps, the diagram looks reasonable.

But in the contrary if you think GIS or current software packages cannot cover the cartographers necessities, well I think we can discuss and share ideas.

My best wishes to everybody!!!
