Well, I have been to the FOSS4G conferences since 2007 and as larger they
grew as more difficult it was to remember faces and get in touch with other
(mainly new) developers ... that's a personal reason.
"1000" is just a number, could be more or less. But finding a venue and
organizing the event gets more difficult, there must be enough
accommodations for attendants, the social events getting huge, ...

About the "live" recording one more comment: if recording takes place
anyway, then doing this live shouldn't be much additional work anymore.
At SotM in Tokyo live streaming was interesting: at the auction in the
final session, people from Europe and North America purchased souvenirs
like flags and other stuff by sending their bid via chat.
Last SotM US I was watching a few talks in the live stream past after
midnight. I could watch them a few days later on Vimeo, but somehow it's
more interesting to watch at the same time even if it's an inconvenient
time of the day. :-)

Attending a conference in person still has much more advantages, so I don't
think providing live streams will be the reason for someone not to attend.
Or would you stay at home if you had the choice to go to the conference or
watch the presentations from the sofa?
