[OSGeo-Conf] Time to step aside

Hi
I’ve been a member of Conference Committee for 9 years which seems like a good innings (Brit cricket term).
We have achieved a lot in that time supporting conference organisers, organising the seed funding and guarantees for conference teams and introducing the Travel Grant programme.
In my time as chair of CC I tried to implement changes to our membership criteria and voting to reduce the size of the committee and prevent blocking vetos. That failed. Had that succeeded I would have long passed my retirement date.
Conference committee has become pretty dormant with our only real action being to call for applicants and then select (if there is a choice to make). I believe that CC needs to lead a process of reviewing and reinventing our annual events both global and regional before the model fails, that won’t be easy and it needs a committed and active membership. I recognise that I no longer have the energy to be part of that process, consequently I am standing down as a member of the committee with immediate effect and I have updated the wiki.
I had been meaning to do this for some time but Till’s resignation prompted me to act. There are 18 members remaining after our resignations, that may be fine if the committee only activates for the global event selection but a smaller number might be more effective if the CC sees its role as safeguarding the future of our global event and a major source of OSGeo revenue.
I’ll stay on the mailing list and will chip in when I think I can help.
May the FOSS be with you
