I think if we could get OSGEO interested in hosting our project, that would be fabulous.  However, as you mention, we won't be able to do that until we have a stable release.

I'm not familiar with maptools.org, but as long as they offer a similar functionality as SF then we could host it with them.  We might have more exposure if we associate/host the project with a provider that specifically deals with GIS applications than perhaps we would with SF (especially in the case of OSGEO).
