I am looking for some advice on the existence, availability and
appropriateness.

Am I asking in the right place? Can anyone help?

OGSA-DAI (http://www.ogsadai.org.uk/) has pipeline architecture. It is
designed like that to work fast in a multi-threaded way with streams of
data.
