I suggest you have a glimpse on 
Ubuntu GIS ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGIS ) and 
Debian GIS project ( http://wiki.debian.org/DebianGis ) 
The above projects have an unofficial repository of Open Source GIS related packages with up-to-date stable versions.
And these distributions will make full use of GIS applications for users as well as provide GIS repository for us.
