Hei,
maybe the manuscript below helps to get an overview of software out
there but unfortunately there has been no space for examples in that:
http://www.geo.unizh.ch/publications/sstein/sstein_hunter_fosgis4sdi_v6_short.pdd
(note, this is a submitted manuscript... not a paper, but I am going to
present this one in April and June too locally)
Thought, SDI examples that I found while doing the research for the paper:
- PostGIS use at IGN France (see
thttp://postgis.refractions.net/documentation/casestudies/)
- Rijkswaterstaat SDI: www.eurosdr.net/meetings/110/presentations/h-5.pdf
- And I think there was some Australian project on editing geodata
online (see http://opengeo.org/publications/ case study Landagate, Sweco).
- Also MapBender and deegree (from Lat/Lon) have been used quite heavily
in Germany for SDI components/Geoportals.
... so FOSS has been provided components, but I haven't seen complete
FOSS based architectures - though, maybe just not reported yet.

For instance I have heard that several Scandinavian countries are collaborating on patches to GeoNetwork to provide a "member state geoportal" service whose backend can be maintained in common.
