[OSGeo-Discuss] How does GeoNetwork generate UUIDs?

Hi there
I've using GeoNetwork v2.4 and gather that the GeoNetwork software somehow automatically generates UUIDs. Can anyone explain/direct me to some documents that explain exactly how the UUID is assigned to a particular record?
