Innovation in use -
Idea concept implementation - application
52°North Student Innovation Prize for Geoinformatics
Innovation is a driving force for the development of our economy. Innovation
is based on innovative ideas, on applicable and implementable concepts,
generating new technologies and applications. However, a novel idea becomes
an innovation only if it meets certain demands and unfolds its use in
practice.
The 52°North Student Innovation Prize encourages students to contribute to
innovation in the field of Geoinformatics. The prize will acknowledge and
financially reward outstanding innovative and trendsetting concepts and
announce them to a greater audience.
52°North invites all students of Geoinformatics and related fields, who have
not yet completed a Masters Degree or Diploma in either Geoinformatics,
Informatics or a related field, to submit a paper outlining their innovative
concept. In addition, the paper must emphasize the innovative quality of the
concept and convincingly describe its feasibility and practical use.
Students may apply as individuals or in small teams (2 - 3 members). Each
applicant (each member of a team) must submit a written declaration and a
tabular CV along with his or her application. An appropriate form is
available here [http://52north.org/52nprize]. The paper should be 3500
5000 words long and written in English. All application documents must be
submitted in digital form per email.
Members of the jury are:
- Prof. Dr. Edzer Pebesma, Institute for Geoinformatics, University of
Muenster
- Dr. Ir. Rob Lemmens, Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth
Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente
- Karl Wiesmann, con terra GmbH
- Prof. Dr. Gerd Buziek, ESRI Deutschland GmbH

- Günther Pichler, ESRI Inc.
- Prof. Dr. Antonio Krüger, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche
Intelligenz
- Prof. Dr. Lars Bernard, Fakultät Forst-, Geo- und
Hydrowissenschaften, Technische Universität Dresden
The winning concepts will be presented at the opening ceremony of the
GEOINFORMATIK 2011 GEOCHANGE on June 15, 2011 in Münster, Germany.
According to the quality of the submissions, the jury will award the
following prizes:
1. First Prize: 1.500 EUR, plus reimbursement of expenses for
presenting a paper at a Geoinformatics conference in 2011/2012 (travel,
accommodation, fees) up to 1.000 EUR.
2. Second and Third Prize: reimbursement of expenses for presenting a
paper at a Geoinformatics conference in 2011/2012 (travel, accommodation,
fees) up to 500 EUR.
52°North offers an internship to all prize winners to foster the practical
realization of innovative ideas. In an inspiring environment, the winners
receive academic and technical support for implementing their technical
ideas as a proof of concept.
The deadline for submitting digital applications is May 1, 2011. The
winner(s) will be notified by May 31, 2011 and publicized and awarded at the
Geoinformatik 2011.
