[OSGeo-Discuss] Which Java OS GIS project to join ?

I would (surprise) like to invite you to take part in the GeoTools project.  

We have a nice developers guide[1] to help get you started[2]; an easy to follow process if you want to create a new module[3] from scratch; or simply help with some of the existing ideas.

Quick suggestion: as an example there series of tutorials[4] and we have a request[5] to make a tutorial on how to use the graph module for route finding. This kind of activity is a great way to get started; as you bring a really scare commodity to any development team - a fresh set of eyes; to both ask questions; and explain the answer clearly.
