Take a look at the Iris project on OSGeo live for powerful NetCDF handling
   http://live.osgeo.org/en/overview/iris_overview.html

The OSGeo Live 7.0 version of the NetCDF4 python library dependency is
broken, but can be easily fixed with...

  pip install -I netCDF4==1.0.4
