thanks for highlighting, Carl! Should be interesting for the community 
discussing here to know, what you mention below might turn out good material 
also for OSGeo when it comes to a discussion about the state of the art.

(Ya know, back in the 90s I stumbled over a patent by Microsoft about multiple 
B-Trees - exactly something I had been asked in my oral diploma exam a decade 
back :) ).
