Hi Patrick,

Important points and i dont know the answers on exact data needs for different aspects but i am sure by using the collective wisdom of all we will be able to find meaningful solutions to Zero Hunger . For example, i am inspired by the work that Trilogis (Italy) did for the NASA Europa Challenge in 2014 [1] where they developed an innovative application [2] is to help FAO  providing support to national locust operators in Africa and Middle East. Desert locusts are a huge problem for the population and due to their ability to change their behaviours and habits  have big effect for those depending on  agriculture in the affected areas. I understand that this application that they developed  is now being used by FAO field staff  which is an excellent practical outcome. Reducing food wastage is an important aspect (from pests to distribution). Though the problem is huge ,every drop in the ocean counts....

This was the inspiration behind launching the "GODAN Local Farming challenge 2017 – Bringing geoinnovation  for solving Zero Hunger" . I hope students and SMEs will take up the challenge to create innovative ideas that will help tackle the solutions of local farming in growing cities, using some aspect of the OpenCitySmart Design and uses NASA’s open source virtual globe technology, WebWorldWind. Ideas may include ways for optimally linking local farming communities directly with potential customers, tools for visualising spatio-temporal aspects of local farming, tools for helping reducing wastage (for example linking with local food banks), and any number of solutions for helping our goal of Zero Hunger.

So i request students and GIS SMEs worldwide to contribute to bringing geoinnovation  for solving Zero Hunger by starting to participate in the Europa Local farming Challenge 2017 [3] and make use of open data (from weather data to satellite data).

An age old problem, a terrifying imbalance between haves and have-nots with children ending up paying the dearest price. Our ^moral^ imperative whether Christian, Muslim, Buddhist or Jew is the same golden rule around the world, yet reality has corrupted circumstance to be the exact opposite, the banana-grabbing chimp-mentality promotes profit over parity. So apparently we do not take ourselves very seriously.

Diminishing agricultural resources, especially given the global shift in our hydrologic system, particularly in areas already on the edge of subsistence, leads to increasing conflict. When there is less to fight over, the fight intensifies, further exacerbating the proverbial 'circle of life.'

GODAN sure has it right idea, Global Open Data is the essential key for enhancing Agriculture and Nutrition. I listened to the presentation, but there still seems some initial targets yet to be defined.

I am not sure if these are the right questions, but we need to ask specifically for what data we want:
Have we identified the data types needed?
Possible sources from the current satellite resources?
(i.e., vegetation, then of course weather: current, medium and long range projections)
Web apps to leverage that data based on highly localized areas to directly serve individual farmers.
Data storage for upload of small local data, let the farmers contribute (via cell phone).
Maybe a GODAN Forum where farmers could ask each other questions about practices, pests or other.

Dear Colleagues,

Currently, nearly 800 million people struggle with debilitating hunger and malnutrition and can be found in every corner of the globe. That's one in every nine people, with the majority being women and children. The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) supports the proactive sharing of open data to make information about agriculture and nutrition available, accessible and usable to deal with the urgent challenge of ensuring world food security. A core principle behind GODAN is that a solution to Zero Hunger lies within existing, but often unavailable, agriculture and nutrition data.

At the GODAN Summit [1] in September 2016, GODAN launched a new Working Group on Capacity Development [2]. We have started a webinar series to reach out to the wider community on the importance of open data. The first webinar took place on March 2017 where we will gave an overview of the activities of the WG and explain how you can get involved. Our next webinar on "Publishing open data from an organisational point of view" and will be led by GODAN Action colleagues from the Open Data Institute [3] in London. This webinar is scheduled to be held on  April 20, 2017 at 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM BST

This webinar will focus on key aspects:

- Why publish open data
- What benefit can publishing open data bring
- Why licenses are the most important aspect of publishing open data
- How to start with publishing open data

This webinar will draw on content available in existing eLearning and in particular, will focus on the following eLearning modules available in the European Data Portal.
