Suchith, and the GeoForAll community,
I am greatly honored by this GeoForAll recognition! Being part of GeoForAll rhymes well with the NASA motto ‘for the benefit of all.’
Question. . .as GeoAmbassador, will there be any formal State dinners that require me to wear a tux? ;-)
I am very glad to be part of a community that doesn’t just talk about what the world needs, we build it! And then we help each other achieve our very best with it.
The NASA Europa Challenge was originated in concert Prof Maria Brovelli of Politecnico di Milano. Any success we have had is greatly a result of our ongoing collaboration with Politecnico di Milano at Como, especially the support of Maria’s world-class GIS students who have been integral to our success. Gabriele Prestifilippo, a graduate student of Maria’s, is responsible for making the recent connection with Helsinki for this year’s Europa Challenge, and Gabriele has done so much else in support of NASA WebWorldWind, the oldest and the truest open source virtual globe platform, with no ‘pro’ version ahead.
We have also depended on SMEs such as Trilogis and their CTO, Dr. Giuseppe Conti, who has been Herculean in delivering GeoForAll results. The eLocust3D program for the UN/FAO being just one example. We look forward to more SMEs engaging with the Europa Challenge and delivering GeoForAll results.
The Europa Challenge is there to deliver geospatial solutions that all of humanity can share. What better way for OSGeo and GeoForAll to inspire the world, while simultaneously making it more resource effective and efficient. This year the top six (6) teams will get an all-expense paid week in Helsinki, travel included, for the last week of August. This will allow these student and SMEs to share their work, helping each other advance their project. We treasure this! It is their gift to the world, given in the spirit of GeoForAll.
Please join us! Students and SMEs alike, share with us your GeoForAll ‘right stuff!’

Subject: [OSGeo-Discuss] GeoAmbassodor – Patrick Hogan
Dear colleagues,
On behalf of GeoforAll community, It is my great pleasure to introduce Patrick Hogan as our GeoAmbassador. Patrick Hogan began his U.S. Government career with the Environmental Protection Agency in 1990, and then joined NASA a year later as their senior environmental geologist at Ames Research Center. In 2002 Patrick was asked to lead the NASA Learning Technologies program. This is where NASA World Wind was born, the world's first open source virtual globe program. In 2009 World Wind received the prestigious NASA Software of the Year award. There are versions of World Wind in Java, Android and for the Web in JavaScript. We are especially grateful for Patrick’s efforts in creating the NASA Europa Challenge initiative which adds great momentum to our efforts to promote openness in education and research worldwide. Now in its fifth edition the aim of this challenge is to inspire ideas for building great applications that serves the INSPIRE Directive and uses NASA’s open source virtual globe technology World Wind. This NASA challenge attracts the best minds to develop their ideas covering a broad range of domains from transportation to air quality to linked data.
Details of his contributions are at http://opensourcegeospatial.icaci.org/2017/06/geoambassodor-patrick-hogan/
We are proud to honour Patrick as our GeoAmbassador and we are extremely grateful for his contributions to Geo for All and for Open Principles in Education.
I am grateful for this opportunity of introducing some of our amazing colleagues from different parts of our world each month as our GeoAmbassadors and get inspired by their amazing work and contributions for the wider community.
Best wishes,
Suchith
