Asunto: [*Correo Sospechoso*] [Geo4All] Data Ethics Policy in Higher Education

Dear colleagues,

The African Association of Universities (a University Association counting over 400 Universities across the African Continent), together with the University of Nottingham and the Ethical Data Initiative, are launching a campaign for the inclusion of Data Ethics in Data Science education on a global scale.

The campaign – seeking to highlight the importance of teaching researchers and future data practitioners about the ethical considerations in the collection, use, reuse and storage of data as part of their training – will begin with a series of informative panel events to be aired on AAU TV, with the inaugural show on Data Ethics Policy in Education starting at 10h00 (British Summer Time) on Tuesday May 23, 2023. The AAU TV network was established in 2018 to deliver news and information on important higher education-related issues on the African Continent such as advancements in education policy, STEM innovation and important research findings. The Ethical Data Discussion series will explore pressing ethical questions inherent in digital technology, data collection and data-driven research; highlighting the need for training digital practitioners in the ethics of their craft.

We are delighted to invite you to an African Association of Universities, University of Nottingham and Ethical Data Initiative event:

The panel, made up of experts in International Development, Data Science, Technology and Education will discuss key questions such as:

• Who owns our data? Who benefits from our data?
• How we might avoid the pitfalls of feudalism and colonialism in this new and constantly evolving landscape.
• Whether, and why, it might be time for data ethics to become an integral part of the education curriculum in schools and universities.
• How can we can build capacity for Data Ethics in universities and industry.
