It is the time of the year to start preparing for OSGeo's participation in the Google Summer of Code 2026 [1]. With the great success of GSoC 2025 projects [2], we are highly excited and motivated to invite the OSGeo projects (Projects, Incubation projects, Guest Projects) to begin compiling the project ideas for GSoC 2026. In order to participate in proposing ideas as a project under the OSGeo umbrella organization, you need to send us (admins: ) the URL for your project's GSoC ideas Wiki page, or just reply to this email. If you are participating for the first time, then you may visit [3] for reference. Please remember that every idea should indicate: 1. A title 2. Brief descriptions of projects that can be completed in ~175 hours or ~350 hours of your GSoC contributor?s time (and labeled appropriately) 3. 3 Mentors' Details - Name, Email (Primary and Supporting mentors) 4. For each project, a list of prerequisites, a description of programming skills needed, and an estimation of the difficulty level 5. A test for the students to submit to your evaluation. The test aims at evaluating if the student is capable of the project, so please design the test having in mind the basic skills required to complete the project. The organization application period will be open till Feb 3, 2026. So, we expect all the URLs by Feb 2, 2026 (~9 days from now). Here is the complete GSoC 2026 timeline [4]. We have already received the ideas submission from the pgRouting project: https://github.com/pgRouting/pgrouting/wiki/GSoC-Ideas%3A-2026 Note: If you floated ideas in the past iterations of GSoC but couldn't progress ahead, then it is a great time to start working on those ideas again. Thanks, and please forward the information to your respective project's mailing list! Always waiting for further queries. :) (PS- A call for contributors to the OSGeo project ideas with instructions on interacting with projects will be sent soon, so please be ready to welcome new members to the community.) That's really a plague. GRASS-GIS has adopted a policy regarding that in https://github.com/OSGeo/grass/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#ai-use-policy . QGIS is about to have one in https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Enhancement-Proposals/pull/363. GDAL will likely do something similar soon. Like there's a Code of conduct that projects can use, maybe OSGeo could have a similar thing. Although I suspect people may have different sensitivities to the subject. We did discuss this and concluded not to accept in-kind donations, such as hours worked, as sponsorship. It tends to conflict with volunteer work, and with cash sponsorship. Many OSGeo sponsors also contribute significant hours in-kind to OSGeo and its projects without recognition as OSGeo sponsor. They, on top of this in-kind work, provide support in cash to FOSS4G conferences and the foundation in accordance with the sponsorship program. We also discussed other forms of recognition for people contributing in other ways, like donating work time. The QGIS project among others has a nice way of doing this, and we will likely propose and adopt a similar formula. We highly appreciate your in-kind and paid contributions to OSGeo and hope this can be expressed in other ways (a.o. as described above).
