<div><br>I think for what Mike wants GRASS is overkill - remember mapinfo doesn't really do that much for most people. I'd suggest uDig (<font style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" size="-1"><b>udig</b>.refractions.net/) as a much simpler and useful desktop gis which being writen in java is nicely multiplatform.
