I use a PHP-based tiler that checks it's cache first and only creates
the tile if it needs to. Also creates an image larger than needed and
crops out the centre so as to minimise edge effects.<br>
The client supports multiple layers which can come from the tiler or
from WMS or WFS sources. It also supports tile transparency (via alpha
filter) which is useful for showing a colour-coded elevation model over
aerial photography etc. Above the tiling system was a set of VML
layers that managed vector data including vector editing. Back end is
PostgreSQL / PostGIS<br>

I didn't get to work on my old CGI app from 2002, but I did find a
couple of the Proof of concepts I did before it, that still work . . .

You can still see the tiling artifacts in the messy seams between
tiles, I remember I had a tough time getting the edge to line up
correctly with the Tiler that I built.<br>

P.S. I can work on the original App and fix it if anyone is interested
in seeing the final. I used these tests to launch some other rather
nice Web Products from. There will even be an announcement soon of our
OpenSource project that was based in part on this work. Another week

The US Patent System allows you to file 'provisionals' that protect
inventions for up to a year before filing an actual patent, and this
application claims the benefits of such a provisional:
"[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional

Apparatus for Generating Tiles in a Digital Mapping System" <attorney

So, anything that was claimed in the "Method and Apparatus for
Generating Tiles in a Digital Mapping System" is patentable if there is
no prior art before Feb, 2005.
