Hi all,

Great news... See the below message from Victor Olaya. If anyone has
ideas on how we get this translated into English, please respond.

Hi all,

I am proud to announce that, after a long work, the first version of
the Free GIS Book is ready to be released. It is a 900+ pages book
which covers most of the main topics regarding GIS, from analysis to
visualization, from the history of GIS to the fundamentals of Web
Mapping or SDIs. A first version is currently available from the book
website, but, since we are still in the process of correcting and
proof-reading the book, it includes linenumbers to make it easier to
locate errors and typos. However, it is complete and can be downloaded
to get an idea of what the book will look like once it is finished.

A book work session (similar to a code sprint, but with text instead
of code...) is scheduled at the Jornadas de SIG Libre de Girona (the
spanish equivalent of FOSS4G), and after that the final version is
expected to be ready. It might not be inmediatly after, but definitely
it will not be long after the conference that the book will be
officially released.

As some of you already know, the book is written in spanish, but we
would love to have an english version, and this is the main reason why
I am sending this email to the list. Next FOSS4G, which will take
place in Denver, is a great oportunity to start working seriously on
that. There will already be a full text to translate and the
conference will take place in a english-speaking country, which means
that many people who can contribute to that english version will be
there.

I think we should start thinking about how to plan this, in case we
want to take the great opportunity that FOSS4G brings us regarding the
free GIS book. I do not have an idea about how to do it, but
suggestions are welcome and it would be great to discuss it. We still
have plenty of time to talk about it.

Regards

Victor Olaya
