(I will just be talking of EL/EPEL/ELGIS 5 here)

Just to clarify the various ELGIS repos as they currently stand:
- elgis: depends on epel, does not require to upgrade base
- elgis-plus: does require to upgrade base
then for each there is a testing/staging repo (elgis-testing and
elgis-plus-testing).

With regard to GDAL, there are two perspectives:
- all the complex stuff with Java we are talking about
- but also simply that we want an up to date GDAL for all the other apps

For me, the second point has a clear priority (even though I have very
interested in progress on the first one).
It is just that the applications in production need to be updated
safely and quickly.

I did not upgrade the current ELGSI GDAL from 1.7.2 to 1.7.3 when it
was released, in order to let Ralph and Viji work on a new packaging.
But now we need to get a simple, safe and not-updating-base GDAL 1.7.3
out of this.

This package can then be deployed either to EPEL 5 or ELGIS 5, this is
transparent since ELGIS is on top of EPEL.
(there is just the issue of the geos and proj versions in EPEL 5 to
discuss, so in the short term we would probably push it to
elgis-testing, so that people can upgrade quickly to GDAL 1.7.3).

So, if I well understand Viji's analysis, we "just" need to create a
separate gdal-java package.
Then we will host it in ELGIS Plus where we will be more flexible.

@Ralph: do you think that you can split up the current GDAL spec file
and create a new one for gdal-java? I can give it a try if you don't
have time to work on this anymore.
