When I tried:

 $ sudo yum install proj proj-epsg proj-nad

I got the following:

Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security
Setting up Install Process
Package matching proj-4.7.0-1.el5.elgis.i386 already installed. Checking
for update.
Resolving Dependencies
There are unfinished transactions remaining. You might consider running
yum-complete-transaction first to finish them.
The program yum-complete-transaction is found in the yum-utils package.

 You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
 You could try running: package-cleanup --problems
                        package-cleanup --dupes
                        rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
The program package-cleanup is found in the yum-utils package.

gdal-static.i386           1.7.3-3_0.el5.elgis         elgis-testing

and just after the previous command, I typed:

$ gdalinfo --version
GDAL 1.7.2, released 2010/04/23 :(

Any further help would be appreciated .
