[ELGIS] libhdf and gdal troubles?

I recently removed all my elgis packages, for a test, and in the meantime had updated libhdf - now GDAL install complained about about required file missing libhdf5.so.6 - I see it was upgraded to .so.7 - so I did a symlink to fix it temporarily. Is there a proper way to fix this? Does it mean an updated GDAL package is needed or is the hdf side messed up?
Using libhdf from EPEL, GDAL from ELGIS. This is on RHEL6 x86_64.
Looking for tips to properly understand how to describe this problem and what the typical workflow is for helping fix or to get it fixed :)
Best wishes,
Tyler
p.s. Happily building QGIS and GDAL in mock these days on SL6! Next up gpstk...
