[fdo-internals] RE: Create a branch for GDAL 1.9 upgrade

Hi Greg,
GDAL 1.9 includes a bunch of new files so I expect the linkage signature will be different. Simply swapping gdal17.dll for a name changed gdal19.dll is unlikely to work. There is over a year of code revisions between GDAL 1.7.3 and GDAL 1.9.
It may be possible to swap an FDO 3.7 WMS or GDAL Provider built using GDAL 1.7 with an FDO 3.7 WMS/GDAL built using GDAL 1.9. I haven't changed any "FDO" code so the link signatures should stay the same.
Regards,
Trevor

A question.... Will GDAL 1.8 be binary compatible with 1.9? If customers are using a build of the WMS provider or GDAL provider that was linked to 1.8, can they swap in the GDAL 1.9 version of the DLL?
Greg

Hi Greg,
It is mostly GDAL build files for now. Some of the unit test projects (WMS, GDAL) have to be updated to copy gdal19.dll instead of gdal17.dll. I was mistaken with the WFS provider - it does not use GDAL so no problems there. OGR does use GDAL and doesn't have a unit test so I am not expecting any changes to OGR.
Here's the changed file list so far:
Thirdparty/gdal
- Entire directory replaced with source for GDAL 1.9 release
Providers/GDAL/Src/UnitTest/UnitTest.vcxproj
Providers/WMS/Src/UnitTest/UnitTest.vcxproj
Thirdparty/Build.bat
- change gdal17 to gdal19
Thirdparty/gdal/gdal.vcxproj
Thirdparty/gdal/gdal_vs10.sln
Thirdparty/gdal/nmake.opt
- Updates for GDAL 1.9 source tree and FDO build structure
There will be some minor install image changes due to the change from gdal17 to gdal19. I expect the same on Linux (when I get that far).
Regards,
Trevor

Yes, the VC 2008 builds are intended to work.
Will only GDAL build files be affected? If others, what changes are you proposing?
What changes are you proposing for the WMS/WFS providers?

Hi list,
I am making good progress on the GDAL 1.9 upgrade. Windows/VC10 is getting close to complete. I haven't started Linux yet. So far, no changes to .cpp/.h files - just changes to various "build files".
The unit tests for the GDAL provider are executing cleanly on 32 and 64 bit. I still need to do some minor fixups for the WMS and WFS providers and some functional validation of the new GDAL Provider with MapGuide.
Since we are releasing FDO 3.7 using VC10, do we still need to maintain the VC9 (2008) builds?
Regards,
Trevor

Trevor,
I know that there are folks who are successfully building and using ECW, MrSID, JPEG2000 and Oracle GeoRaster support on Linux. But to the best of my knowledge this is being done individual by individual rather than building sharable plugins.
Partly this is because of
the variety of Linux versions and partly it is an issue with licensing constraints on most of the above.
Best regards,
