 The current automake build chatter is *extremely* noisy, making build
 errors or warnings very hard to sift through.

 Automake since 1.11 supports silent rules, which really reduces the noise
 in build chatter (gcc/ld/libtool calls are hidden), while still displaying
 build warnings and errors should they occur.
