 MariaDB is a drop-in binary-compatible fork for MySQL.

 The same can be said of its client access library (libmariadb).

 By building the MySQL FDO provider against libmariadb, not only would we
 retain our existing MySQL support, but we'd get support for MariaDB for
 free as well.
