Actually, RFC 54, http://trac.osgeo.org/fdo/wiki/FDORfc54 concerns a MapInfo Provider as well. Why write your own when that one will be available in due course? You can also use the OGR provider to access MapInfo files for Read-Only purposes. 

You should really read the relevant RFC54 email postings made to the 'fdo-internals' email alias and get an indication of what already has been done, and how it relates comparatively to the OGR provider.

to describe the styles of features. Now it requires just the Insert command.
I use C Sharp to implement it.
