Hi, Yes, that was the problem - the Geom in the Filter string was meant to be
the Geometry field fieldname
which just happens to be called Geom in OGR providers but not in general!!
The geometry field had a completely different name in my WFS example -
changing that fixed the problem. 
Thanks for provoking me into looking again at my code and Googling parts of
my filter string.
