I wrote johnjohn: https://launchpad.net/johnjohn to run on series60 phones
-- it was inspired by maemo-mapper.
I wrote a little series60 emulation layer so it will run on linux with gtk
-- though that needs a little work.
You are correct though, that it isn't much code to write a good mapping app
in python. Performance is not really an issue -- even on an old nokia 6600
it was ok.
I just got an android, so fear I have to write java now :(
