I think there is also this north of campus, no experience, so do not take this as recommendation:

Hi,
Anyone know the area of the conference well enough to throw around some
accommodation suggestions?
I am traveling with one other person who is also attending, we'd be keen to
stay near where the action is but also experience some of what Melbourne
has to offer.
Thanks
Andrew

Good question Andrew. Aiming to get this up on the website soon, but here
is what we have so far:
Accommodation
Given this is our first conference, we’re focusing our efforts elsewhere
and do not have any official accommodation partners. The following is a
list of recommendations provided by our community. We have no affiliation
with any of accommodation options listed below.
*$$$ Big money*
*Rydges on Swanston* <https://www.rydges.com/rates/#/swanston-melbourne>
Average price per night ($AUD): $189
Address: 701 Swanston St, Carlton
Distance to venue (walking): 13 minutes
*$$ Middle of the road*
*Brady Hotels Central Melbourne* <http://www.bradyhotels.com.au/>
Price: $169
Address: 30 Little La Trobe St, Melbourne
Distance to venue: 23 minutes
*ibis Melbourne Swanston Street Hotel*
<https://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-A3N5-ibis-melbourne-swanston-street/index.shtml>
Price: $116
Address: 609 Swanston St, Carlton
Distance to venue: 17 mins
*$ Cheap*
*Space Hotel/Hotel* <https://spacehotel.com.au/>
Price: $35
Address: 380 Russell street, Melbourne
Distance to venue: 25 minutes
*AirBnB*
AirBnB <https://airbnb.com.au> is another economical option with plenty of
listed properties in Melbourne. Partner up with others to reduce your
costs. Feel free to reach out to other interested parties on the Maptime
Australia Slack group

I’ve used these before for visitors – they can be a relatively cheap option if you have people you can share a 2-br apartment with:
http://www.clocktower.com.au/carlton-clocktower-apartments-hotel-melbourne.php
In Carlton, easy to get to city etc by tram / walk
