[FOSS4G-Oceania] Fwd: Potential Georabble during event week

I have changed my thoughts somewhat based on the comments received

I think Georabble will create its own momentum irrespective of Ozri and/or FOSS4g. And as Georabble is generally a ‘local’ event then I am not too concerned about people from outside MEL not being able to attend.

Our focus should really be FOSS4g and SoTM.

Hi All

I'm leaning towards the emerging consensus that we look at a GeoRabble on the Thursday.

I don't think we should change the dinner, and tickets go on sale now so we need to lock that in...

+1 Thursday

A few thoughts...

I don't think holding BOF sessions sufficiently addresses the problem of changing the icebreaker. I speak from my own experience as a FOSS4G-curious newbie, where the icebreaker was a chance to meet fellow attendees before the beginning of the conf, so I felt less alien over the course of the event. It seems to me that BoF sessions are more designed to enable specific groups of people to coalesce around a specific topic, and not necessarily accessible to all attendees.

I'm strongly in favour of trying to engage with OZRI attendees, if possible, and raise their awareness of open source software & the community. However, I'm not totally convinced that holding a Georabble on the night of the OZRI event will attract large numbers of these people, who will be at the Convention Centre across town, and will already have been hanging out at a social event with free drinks (theoretically until 6 pm, but potentially later). Also, it's not clear to me how a Georabble event would achieve this awareness raising, unless it was open source themed (possible - we should try for this).

Perhaps the opportunity to reach OZRI attendees could be realised by having GR on Thursday night, generating a bit of buzz around the idea of a 'GIS Week in Melbourne', and making sure we run some comms that will get their attention, eg. by hash tagging #ozri on some of our outgoing messages around that time.

I'm inclined to think that we should carry on with the current plans (icebreaker Tuesday, dinner Wednesday), and slot the GR in on Thursday evening or Friday afternoon.

So, for me:

-1 to GeoRabble on Tue 22

-1 to GeoRabble on Wed 23

+1 to GeoRabble on Thu 24 or Fri 25

(incidentally, it occurs to me that I don't know the difference between +0, 0, and -0 - can someone explain how this voting system is actually supposed to work?)
