ACT support for the Victorian Bushfire Surveying Taskforce
The ACT Mapping and Planning Support Group (MAPS) were formed in 2005
and is a group of 6 coordinators and a register of volunteers in the
ACT.
It was designed to provide GIS support during emergencies in the
Canberra region, working under the auspices of the ACT Emergency
Services Authority and Rural Fire Service NSW (Lake George Zone). Many
of the volunteers in the group are SSI members but membership is open.
Frank Blanchfield, SSI Chair -ACT Region and the founder of MAPS has
provided the following report;
”What seems like a life time ago, on 9 February, the Victorian Police
put out a call for GIS assistance via the national Emergency Services
network. Our ESA ACT sponsor (Steve Forbes) volunteered MAPS and
subsequently we sent 8 people to Victoria on 10 February. These were
replaced with 8 more, including me, on 14 February and these inturn were
replaced with another 8 on 18 February. These were replaced by 4 people
on 23 February and 5 people on 26 February. Initially we were deployed
around the State but eventually finished up at Kilmore Police Station
and then at Williamstown Police Station. We are providing back office
GIS support for the police (and army) who are searching the burnt areas
mostly for human remains.”
