Bushfire Mapping Award

Atherton Tablelands GIS has been highly commended for its Northern Queensland Bushfire Mitigation project at the Excellence in e-Government Awards.

The awards were presented at the CeBIT Australia event in Sydney (12-14 May).
The project comprises a collaborative online data warehouse and mapping tools for organisations involved in dealing with bushfires. The tools are provided free to the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and other fire mitigation stakeholders, including the Department of Environment and Resource Management and local councils across the region.

GIS co-ordinator Alistair Hart believes the project is the first Australian emergency management application to use free and open source software.
Atherton Tablelands GIS is the mapping unit of the Tablelands Regional Council.
