[FOSS4G2016] A postcard for promoting the conference on print media

Hi Anton,

part 1. on the 3 designs:
To me, resambling the website is not a goal in itself. It's just 2 different media types; web and print
I used prints of the 3 design to place them in a postcard&folder-rack in a nearby café. See images attached.

Some pro's and con's on the 3 designs:
+ the coloreffect in the subtext (the annual conference...) in design #5
+ the use of the osgeo logo in #2 and #5
+ the logo nearly at top in #5 (in #2 the logo might get obscured if used in a postcard-rack, as does the text "2016.foss4g.org"
+ the font use in #2. Although the use of the (non open source!) font Digital Sans is not required, the font used in #3 and #5 is not the best combination with the logo. Perhap use a lighter/thinner style for this text?
- logo size. Especially in #5 it seems to get reduced because of the semi-transparent rectangle
- the 2016.fossgis.org in #3 and 35 seems like added as an extra (instead of being part of the design)
- the paleness of #2 (a difficult to print properly, with the fading colors)
- the lack of the text "Germany" (does everybody know where Bonn is located?)
- alignment. The website has left alignment, the 3 postcard designs have centre alignment. By design?

part 2. On fonts & licenses:
Would any of these handwriting fonts do?
http://openfontlibrary.org/en/search?category=handwriting
Not because of the 10-dollar expense, but because of the free-as-in-freedom aspect.

The "Digital Sans" font comes at a price of € 31,99 per seat (indivudual pc) for a single style (e.g. italic or bold), and 175,99 per seat for a complete style set (normal, bold, italic, thin etc.)

Being an open source community, I think we should use an open source font (OSF).
I haven't found a suitable OSF replacement for the Digital Sans, but i think Open Sans (also used on parts of the website) would do a great job.

Regards,

Gert-Jan

Hi all,

thanks for all your valuable inputs!

So I tried my hands on the postcard... The current heat wave in germany did its best to rob me of my creativity. But anyway, since time is running out for them to be printed for Como... here is what I did: [1].

The images should fit nicely on a postcard format (DIN A6) at a resolution of 300 dots per inch. The printing quality will be a surprise, I'm afraid, since I have no printing capabilities here. Maybe someone can make a quick test print before a few hundred failures get out?

For the front, I guess 'front-05' is best, since it resamples the website a little.

The backs are almost identical (*-nobg.png means without a dim photo
background) and should have enough space to write friendly messages on it =).
I kind of like the idea of back-02*'s 'See you in Bonn'. The message could be replaced by something else for a later version.
back-02* use the 'Luna Bar' font [2], which is not really free ($ 10) and will have to be replaced by a real handwriting or a free_as_in_freedom font (I'll look into that soon). Otherwise I took only the fonts and photo used on the website [3].

Which brings up an interesting issue: copyrights.
At the last FOSSGIS-hacking-weekend in Essen I talked to the Küstenschmiede-guys. They said that they purchased a license of the photos (from [4], I think) and the font 'digital sans' used in the logo.
Does that mean that these resources must be re-licensed by OSGeo or $someone_else or is there anything like a license-inheritance? I mean, $we (not necessarily Küstenschmiede) will have to create different other things with these. Any thoughts about that?

To be honest, I find something to nag about on each of the designs...
Anyway, tell me what you think. Which one do you like or dislike?
I'm always open to suggestions and harsh criticism =)

Have a nice start into the new week!
~ Anton
