OK, I have this in cooker contrib at the moment:

At least we settled on the same major number, what do you propose about 
gdal-python? (In terms of keeping package names consistent?) Do you want 
to change or should I?

Could you mail the patch to me or the list?

But that's going to mean I have to rebuild grass .... :-( Maybe I should 
leave it till after 9.0 is out, or maybe I shouldn't let un-SONAMED libs 
into a stable distro - sounds like I'll be rebuilding grass.
